‘THOUGHT PROVOKING DECEMBER GIFTS’

6 december 2018 – 6 january 2019

In the month December the thought provoking products by ‘Disarming Design from Palestine’ were exhibited and sold at Hôtel Droog in Amsterdam.  The products are objects for everyday use. From silk scarves to T-shirts, from earrings to eye mask, but also honey, spices and olive soap. The products embody — often in a poetic and unusual way —the characteristics of Palestinian life today, and enable us to look at this reality from another angle. All proceeds from the sales went to the Palestinian design label and was  used for further development and production of new designs.

This exhibition was generously supported by: Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK)

DESIGN MUSEUM GHENT (B)
‘MY HOUSE IS YOUR HOUSE’

16 February – 15 April 2018

On the occasion of the festival Under Construction, Flemish-Palestinian connections, Disarming Design from Palestine was invited to create an installation at the Design museum Ghent. The presentation consisted out of four style rooms in Hotel de Coninck with products from the Disarming Design collection. The museum became a private house again, with a dining room, leisure room, television room and a dressing; as if a Palestinian family had moved in and welcomed the visitor in ‘their’ home. The house was filled with conversation fragments that took place in Gaza and Ramallah, and the objects narrated about daily realities in Jerusalem, Gaza, the Westbank and refugee camps. All products related to the domestic environment and contributed to the story of what it means to be Palestinian or to live in Palestine. Pertinent questions for many Palestinians are touched upon. What is ‘home’? When and where are we at home? How can it be reached? When can we go home? Through these questions the objects — often in a poetic and unusual way — enabled us to look at politics from another angle.

Feel at home, listen to what the products want to tell you. البيت‭ ‬بيتك; ‘this house is your house’ as guests are welcomed in Palestine.

THE LAB, DARAT AL FUNUN / AMMAN DESIGN WEEK (JO)
‘DISARMING DESIGN FROM PALESTINE’

7 – 15 October 2017

This exhibition displayed the products developed during a two-week long workshop by a team of Jordanian, Palestinian and Dutch designers who collaborated with local craftswomen and men from the Gaza refugee camp in Jerash. Collaboratively they developed a series of thought provoking products. The workshop, guided by Ghadeer Dajani (Disarming Design’s production manager), Annelys de Vet (Disarming Design’s founder), Haya Bustami (Education and Community Outreach at Amman Design Week) and Reem Marji (architect, Darat al Funun team) — plus May Khoury (designer) as visiting tutor — sought to create collaborative learning experiences through multidisciplinary and international exchange. The participants produced a line of items that reflect on the reality in the camp and the stories the artisans shared, varying from a wooden labyrinth game to an origami folded bag, and from a luminous clothespin to a baby blanket with embroidered song lines.
A selection of the workshop’s outcomes were taken into production in the camp, and were being exhibited and sold at The Lab at Darat al Funun throughout Amman Design Week, alongside a show of the existing collection of the label. All together the goods were telling alternative stories and reflected upon the function of creative practices in situations of conflict.
