Unpaid position | Disarming Design from Palestine
Disarming Design from Palestine (DDfP) is an independent non-profit organisation operating at the intersection of a design label and a learning platform. The organisation fosters thought-provoking design from Palestine by developing and distributing useful objects that carry poetic as well as political meaning. Often rooted in experiences of everyday life in occupied Palestine, these objects function as cultural artefacts that invite reflection and dialogue, serving as tangible entry points into complex social, historical, and political realities.
Alongside product development, DDfP acts as a platform for learning and exchange, working with designers, artists, researchers, educators, and cultural institutions through exhibitions, publications, talks, workshops, and educational initiatives. Design is approached not as a neutral aesthetic practice, but as a form of storytelling, knowledge production, and cultural positioning.
Disarming Design from Palestine is currently seeking a new member to join its Board of Directors and strengthen the organisation with legal expertise.
In accordance with Belgian non-profit law, the Board of Directors holds collective responsibility for the governance, strategic direction, and legal and financial oversight of the organisation. The Board safeguards the mission and long-term vision of DDfP, ensures compliance with statutory and legal obligations, and supports the sustainable development of the organisation. Board members act as strategic advisors while respecting the operational and artistic autonomy of the team.
The Board meets four times per year. This is a voluntary and unpaid position.
We are looking for a professional with a legal background who is willing to contribute their expertise to the governance and development of an internationally active cultural non-profit organisation.
Candidates may have experience in areas such as non-profit law, governance, contracts, intellectual property, employment law, compliance, risk management, or other relevant legal fields. Previous experience as a board member is welcomed but not required.
More important than a specific specialisation is the willingness to provide sound legal advice, contribute to careful decision-making, and help the organisation navigate legal and governance-related challenges as it continues to grow internationally.
Familiarity with the Belgian Code of Companies and Associations (WVV/CSA) is particularly valuable, including director duties and liability, statutory filing obligations (UBO register, publications in the Belgian Official Gazette, annual accounts), and the development of internal governance documents such as the internal rules (huishoudelijk reglement / règlement d’ordre intérieur). Working knowledge of Dutch and/or French is a strong asset for engaging with Belgian legal and administrative matters; English is the working language of the Board.
The ideal candidate combines legal knowledge with a strong sense of social and cultural engagement. We are looking for someone who has an affinity with the mission of Disarming Design from Palestine and who is interested in questions of cultural identity, social justice, international collaboration, and the role of design as a catalyst for dialogue and awareness.
Board members are expected to act with integrity, discretion, empathy, and a commitment to good governance. They should be able to engage constructively in discussions, think strategically, and contribute from a position of critical support and shared responsibility.
Joining the Board of Disarming Design from Palestine offers a unique opportunity to contribute to an internationally recognised cultural initiative that works with designers, artists, institutions, and audiences across different contexts. Board members become part of a committed and engaged organisation that values dialogue, learning, and meaningful cultural exchange.
While the position is unpaid, it offers the opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organisation and to support the development of innovative cultural and educational projects with international reach.
If you would like to contribute your legal expertise to the future development of Disarming Design from Palestine, we invite you to send a short motivation letter and CV.
